STEPHEN SHORE
INTRODUCTION
“I do what feels natural, but I can’t say I haven’t thought about it”: Shore (born 10/08/1947) is an American photographer, known for his images of banal scenes and objects in the United States and his pioneering use of colour in the 70's and "makes sense of the space around them". He is a self-taught photographer and has always been interested from an early age, Shore has also photographed many images then those in America. Shore's known for his banal images, he also take a lot of landscape photographs of different states and areas around America. Shore on top of that has also take photographs for some Fashion magazines such as "ELLE". In recent years Shore's worked in Israel, The West Bank and Ukraine. His inspiration comes from, when he was 10 years old he received a copy of "Walker Even's" book, "AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHS"; which influenced Shore greatly.
WHAT DO I THINK/SEE WHEN I SEE SHORE'S WORK?
When I look at Shore's work I notice how bold and clear the images are. They are so nicely defined and spacious. His use of colour draws you away from the fact that there is lot of empty space and so does all the detail because despite the the space, there is a lot of detail. I see how prominent the colors are and how they all contrast with another, they all work together as well as the subjects in his photographs. For example the walls maybe red and brown but the floor and sofa is a rich blue but it works. I feel like Shore has used that space to allow the colors to combine and work together to furfil the photographs purpose. When I look at Shore's work I also notice how theres a good sense of light and shadowing, each image incorporates both of those aspects which adds character to the photographs and also allows the main subjects to be focused on (where the light in hitting) and the least important past to not be focused on (wheres there a lot of shadowing and darkness) but not in every case e.g. the image of the girl in the pool, the whole image is exposed to light, there is shadowing from the sun beds but the rest is completely exposed which allows the focus to be on the girl and also the water because the colour is so vibrant and clear.
MY WORK:
These are two images I took, thinking about the light, Shore incorporates in his work and made it my main focus. I only took two images because I wanted to actually think and wait to catch the perfect time and light before i took any photographs which could be a response to Shore's (these pictures were taking over a space of a week).
